Migration strategy

Everything in this folder is about the decisions taken before anyone installs an agent.

The seven migration strategies is the starting point: retire, retain, rehost, relocate, repurchase, replatform, refactor. Every application in the portfolio gets one of those labels, and the label determines the tooling, the cost and the risk.

Services and strategies maps those decisions onto AWS services, and covers the shift from migrating servers to migrating workloads — the same application often lands on three different AWS services once it is broken into components.

Not everything moves. Hybrid cloud architectures covers the patterns where on-premises infrastructure stays, either permanently or as a deliberate first step.

Two practical pages sit alongside the strategy work: choosing a data-transfer route for how the bulk data actually gets there, and network migrations and cutovers for the addressing and routing decisions that are painful to change later.
